Self hypnosis is one way of relieving the chronic stress that chips away at the part of your brain responsible for memory. Here are seven steps to get you into a nice, relaxed state to help you protect your precious gray matter.
1) Find A Quiet Place
To begin find a secluded, quiet place and sit on a comfy chair or couch. You can sit up or lie down – though whichever you choose, don’t cross your legs or arms. Let your body be free.
2) Get Out The Do Not Disturb Sign
Make sure that you have a window of time with no distractions. You need a good thirty minutes of alone time to see effective results.
3) Chase Your Thoughts Away
Once you are in a comfortable position, close your eyes and imagine your thoughts, anxieties, and stress melting away. Try to rid your mind of any intruding thoughts. At first, this may be difficult so don’t resist the urge to follow the thoughts. Simply acknowledge them and then let them drift away.
4) Relax Your Body
Starting with your toes, imagine that your body is becoming lighter. Your legs become weightless, then your hips, and stomach until you feel light like a feather. Visualize your muscles relaxing starting with your feet, then calves and all the way up to your shoulders. Continue until your entire body is completely relaxed. Take slow, deep breaths. Imagine your worries being pushed out into the air as you exhale and imagine bright, energized light entering your body as you inhale.
5) Enjoy The Feeling
Now that your body is completely relaxed, visualize yourself in a nice warm pool of water. The water is just above your ankles. Imagine that you are wading deeper and deeper. With every step, you become more and more relaxed, until the water reaches your shoulders and you become one with the water.
6) Speak What You Wish To Change
This is the point where you’ll begin to “speak” what you wish to change. Say things like “I am peaceful. I am relaxed.” Avoid using the words “not” or other negative statements. Instead of saying, “I will not smoke anymore.” say “I am free of smoking.”
7) “Awaking”
Once you have repeated your phrase or phrases as many times as you like, begin to count from zero to ten. Tell yourself that when you reach the number ten you will regain full consciousness, you’ll be happy and relaxed. Make sure to give yourself ample time after self-hypnosis to “come to” and steady yourself before standing.
Whatever your trouble, self-hypnosis is an effective tool to transform your life. Give it a try, your nerves will thank you!

Adrew, in my experience it doesn’t make any difference if you don’t believe in hypnosis. The result are always the same.
I totally agree with your 2. statement ;)

I find that music really helps me to go into trance. I know I really struggle when all is quiet.
I believe following two items are important to make hypnosis a successful therapy:
1. Your thinking that hypnosis will be successful
2. Your commitment to follow instructions
To do this, meditation before starting this therapy is very important. Who would like to go for hypnosis should do a meditation and feel that this would be a successful method for their treatment
Erin,
This is a nice simple straightforward guide you created that people can follow in order to induce themselves into a state of trance and conduct hypnosis upon themselves. If people followed these 7 steps you’ve layed out then they’d be overcoming a lot of the typical stresses to do with day to day life.
I hope to see some further articles on hypnosis in addition to your other brain training articles, perhaps something to do with covert hypnosis.
This is a good overview. Manyh people are confused about what hypnosis is a nd what it can do for you.

I agree this is a good summary of self hypnosis. I think self hypnosis is great to use and very easy to learn. It’s very different from covert hypnosis or therapeutic hypnosis because you must play the role of hypnotist and subject.

This is a great summary of self hypnosis for beginners. Let me add a couple of things. It’s helpful, when starting out, to give yourself an instruction as to the length of time you will be in trance, and also the purpose of your trance. Your unconscious is a great clock. You’ll come out when you said you would. By giving the unconscious an instruction as to the key purpose of trance, you amplify the effects.
Nice blog you have. I’ll be back!
